Important steps to start your career as freelancer [2019]


Freelancing occupied a prominent role as work from home job. Before starting your career as freelancer, you need to do research well about it. You should be well versed with the freelancer requirements.

Here are the most important steps to become a freelancer:

  • Define your goals
  • Find Portfolio Niche
  • Identify your clients
  • Set prices for your services
  • Build quality portfolio
  • Create examples of your work
  • Mention about potential customers
  • Learn tips to pitch yourself
  • Thoughtfully choose your clients

Define Your Goals

Identifying your goal is very important for freelancers. You should be very specific and confident in setting your goal. Do you know what exactly you want to become? Where you want to be in next six months, a year or after five years? You may want to buy a new home or start an organization or something else!

Start writing everything in your mind. Each and every small detail will helps you to set an ultimate goal. Why do you want to become a freelancer? Which skill set you want to be in? What kind of approach you want to do? What services you can provide? How much time you can spend? How to manage time? How will you deliver the service? How to support customers? All these things are very important for a freelancer.

Once you made a note of them, refine them. Write down the goals, priority wise. Select few to start with– as less as you select at a time, the more chance of winning each goal. Scheduling goals will gives you strong ability to manage things perfectly.

Simple, basic but reliable steps of setting goals:

  • Put your goals in writing. Choose goals which are meaningful, measurable, and those that you can impact.
  • Write down achievements, actions and obstacles associated with each goal along with a step-by-step action plan for accomplishing goals and overcoming obstacles.
  • Identify the key performance indicators you will use to track the progress of your goal.
  • Assign each goal yourself in a specific period of time and then take ownership of the goal and be responsible for its success.
  • Have a system in place for tracking each goal before you take action. Include measures, dates and the name of the person or people who helped for each goal.

Find Profitable Niche

The most important and toughest part of freelancing career is – finding the right niche.

Isn’t it? Yes, obviously.

It’s not that much easy to set a niche for your freelancing career to get good money into your account. It’s a well designed professional career, yet it’s a good competitive world with certain limitations.

Do the research about freelancing career and check the most trending freelancing jobs online. Based on your research and your interest choose the best one as your niche. Polish it by learning in depth to become an expert on it.

Identify your clients

Finding clients and marketing yourself – it’s the most challenging part of your freelance career.

If you are a new comer and don’t know about marketing your freelance profile, then it’s time to build tasks yourself.

Prepare yourself with strong background, plan it to grab the attention of the clients. It’s not that much difficult to get right clients, but you have to do a plan and execute it without fail. Stick to your plan and never change, once you have started.

Define your target market

It’s first step to show yourself to the market. Define your target market, who is it you’re targeting? Know who your audience is in relation to your freelance goals. Then tailor your branding and promotions to them.

You have the freedom to define your market by what type of clients you’d like to work. You can describe – how you enjoy your kind of work!

If you are confused or don’t know – whom to target or what type of marketing you need to target, then don’t worry. You can expose yourself as generalist and detail the skills and area of expertise. Think broadly and act up on it.

Set goals and deadlines

You might have multiple goals to accomplish. It’s good to have but in order to achieve them, you need to break them into manageable tasks and create deadlines to achieve them.

When will you start marketing your freelance business? Will you have some sort of promotion over the holidays? If so, when does it need to be finished in order for you to prepare its launch? Consider this kind of stuff and write it down in your tasks.

Write down the each and every detail of your tasks and schedules. Every point is important to manage in a timely manner.

Breakdown the types of clients and send emails regularly framing them with respective content. Educate the clients with your services, reach them and show your works and how you can help them with your services.

These kind of tasks helps you to engage with more clients and make your name out of the competitors. Once you accomplish more tasks, you’re more optimistic about the goals ahead that you’ve yet to complete.

Finding your first client

Most of the time clients will come to you to get their work done. But for a new comer, it’s time to go to the clients. You need to expose your profile, works, show case your projects. Start promoting yourself on digital marketing.

Give detailed information about your services. How they can be benefit from your work? What they can expect? How will you get it done? Your timings, quality of work with time management gets you more clients.

Once you have done with your first project, through word of mouth only, you will get another. But to get them in your box, you need to do some foot work. The more you communicate and engage with clients one-on-one the more you get the works.

Tell everyone that – “I am starting my career as freelancer and I am giving my best of services. If anyone need my works, I am at service.”

Word of mouth makes lot of impact rather than digital marketing. Of course, now-a-days mostly used method it is. Though the initial projects are from small business or shops or whatever, it really important for a starter. Do your best and get more works with the help of those.

Review a potential client’s online presence and see if there’s any value you could bring to the table. Could you build them a more effective website? Are there any opportunities they’re missing out on? How can you make their business better with your services? Use this to your advantage when introducing yourself.

Personalize your email for each client, it’s easy to notify the mass mail. Don’t over boil it. Give an introduction, your services and projects you have done. Address the contact by their name, and be sure you don’t talk too much about yourself. Share with them your interest in them and how you can help.

Once you have successfully grab first project with client, then it’s time to start your job of making money. Along the way you can refine your sales process so you will complete projects faster, generate more leads with your completed work, and build an effective portfolio.

Set Prices for your Services

In freelance competitive market, pricing is very important along with the quality of work. There are various strategies in setting price for your services. I have discussed here every pricing style.

  • Hourly Pricing – As like all freelancers, I started working for hourly pricing. When getting started with this pricing isn’t bad idea for new freelancers. You are getting compensation for the work you are done for hours. If the client’s need changes or project gets more time to complete then you will get compensated for the extra hours you worked on the project.
